About The School Nurses Association Of North Carolina
The School Nurses Association of North Carolina, or SNANC as it is frequently called, can be best understood by analyzing its mission statement:
Mission Statement
“The School Nurse Association of North Carolina exists to support professional school nurses in the promotion of optimal student health and success”.
What we can see by this mission statement is that the School Nurses Association of North Carolina is a professional organization of school nurses who operate specifically in the state of North Carolina and who exist in order to ensure that the quality of school nursing in their region stays at a high level and that the best interests of all of its member are met where possible.
Member Benefits
There are a number of benefits involved in being a member of the School Nurses Association of North Carolina. Most professional organizations of this kind offer benefits to their members in order to inspire them to join, thereby improving their membership numbers, but also improving the profession in general through the many educational and other opportunities offered. The primary benefits of belonging to the School Nurses Association of North Carolina are as follows:
As a member of the School Nurses Association of North Carolina you will receive by e-mail or snail-mail a quarterly subscription to The School Nurse Advocate. This is an extremely useful publication to have access to as it informs you regarding news, legislation, continuing education opportunities, and events related to school health. The best way to ensure that your skills and knowledge are up to date is by reading what skills and knowledge are expected of you.
Members of the School Nurses Association of North Carolina are offered regional Continuing Education Programs on topics pertinent to school nursing. Continuing education is a compulsory aspect of seeking re-licensure. Through the School Nurses Association of North Carolina you will be in a position to complete your continuing education in subjects that are actually directly related to your field and which will give you an edge in your profession.
If you are extremely interested in studying to be a school, nurse but you don’t have the funds to do so, you may be eligible for a scholarship opportunity offered by the School Nurses Association of North Carolina if you meet the requirements. SNANC has established the Marilyn H. Asay Scholarship for School Nurse Leadership. The purpose is to enhance the clinical practice and leadership skills of school nurses in North Carolina through ongoing education to maximize the health and well being of the state’s school age children and adolescents.
There are also a number of opportunities for recognition through the School Nurses Association of North Carolina if you stand out from the crowd. For example, members are eligible to receive the School Nurse of the Year Award and the School Nurse Administrator of the Year, presented annually by SNANC if they have performed beyond the call of duty and if they meet the requirements for the award.
As a member of the School Nurses Association of North Carolina you will be eligible to attend SNANC regional and state business meetings. These meetings provide networking opportunities, information on clinical, legal, legislative, and ethical issues facing North Carolina school nurses. Networking is an important way to be build your skill set and knowledge base, as well as an important way to socialize with other sin your profession and increase your career opportunities. The information provided at these business meetings is extremely useful in keeping up to date with the profession.
Members have opportunities for leadership and professional growth in SNANC. Interested members can become regional and/or state officers as well as committee leaders. Members are encouraged to write articles for The School Nurse Advocate and to make presentations at SNANC conferences.
Through the School Nurses Association of North Carolina members are also adequately represented and their concerns are voiced through SNANC’s officers to DPI, the state legislature, NCNA, as well as through SNANC’s affiliation with the National Association of School Nurses. This level of advocacy allows you to actively work towards making the necessary changes within the profession.
The School Nurses Association of North Carolina supports a lobbyist at the Legislature. SNANC’s lobbyist works long hours keeping SNANC’s membership informed of legislation that impacts school nursing practice.
The School Nurses Association of North Carolina offers an e-mail based discussion list or list serve which is used for communicating and networking among members. Membership on the list is reserved for SNANC members, meaning that as a member of School Nurses Association of North Carolina you will have an edge over school nurses who are not members.
