The National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists was founded in 1995 for the purpose enhancing and promotion the practice of clinical nursing in particular and the nursing profession in general. The National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists is the voice for all clinical nurse specialists in the country.
According to its website, the association has the following mission and goals:

- Discounts for liability insurance through NSO.
- Development, support and dissemination of CNS educational program criteria for evaluation.
