State Info:
New York has an enormous population, especially when you consider that it is quite far from being the biggest state in the country. Because there are so many people there is also a high demand for health care professionals who are able to take care of all of these people. These health care professionals consequently have a very stable job. As other industries decline the health care industry remains strong, and is therefore a great industry to become involved in.
The best way to get started in the health care industry is by qualifying as an LPN nurse. An LPN has very basic duties, but the qualifications only take a year or so in New York. Once you are an LPN you will then have the option of doing LPN to RN or even BSN programs which will open your options even further. There are many schools in New York where you will be able to study for your qualification. In fact the only state that seems to have more schools than New York is California. In short, a career as an LPN is a wise one to choose for anyone living in the state of New York.
Licensing Requirements
The first step to being licensed as an LPN is enrolling in an accredited LPN course. In order to do this you will:
- Need to be older than 17
- Need to have a high school diploma
- Need to pass a background check
- Need to pass a health check
Once you have enrolled in the program you will then have to complete the theoretical and clinical sides of the course over a period of about 1 or 2 years. Then you will have to write the NCLEX-PN exam. On completion of the exam you will be licensed to practice as an LPN.
Exam Fee
In order to write the examination you will need to pay an amount of money to the company that administers the exam. This company is called Pearson Vue and the amount of money that you will have to pay is $200. To apply for the exam you will also have to pay an amount of money to the New York Board of Nursing. This amount of money is $143 and it covers your application fee, licensing fee, and the fee for the background check. You will then also have o renew your license once every three years at a cost of $50.
Salaries
Program | Hourly Rate | Annual Rate |
LPN | $16.78 | $34380 |
RN | $35.83 | $74528 |
BSN | $40 | $74,876 |
Financial Aid Available
There are several nursing scholarships, grants and loans as well as plenty of other programs that you can enroll in New York if you need financial assistance paying for your LPN studies. One such program that is specific to New York is the Nursing Faculty Loan Forgiveness Incentive Program. This is offered as an incentive in order to try and get more people to enter the field of nursing and to get more nurses into the understaffed areas of the state. In return for partial forgiveness of your loan you will be required to work in a health care facility designated by the state. This is a good option if you went the route of taking out a loan for your studies. Federal loans have the best interest rates, but are very difficult to qualify for. Private loans tend to be easier to get, but the interest rates are consequently a lot higher than those of federal loans. Obviously a grant or scholarship would be the best option for you, but these are very difficult to get as they can be needs based, in the case of grants, or award based, in the case of scholarships. However, there are many options available out there and it is in your best interests to explore all of those options.
