About The Massachusetts Nurses Association
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, MNA as it is frequently called, is a professional organization that exists to advocate for the needs and rights of nurses based in Massachusetts and to provide these individuals with a number of opportunities in education, career advancement, and personal development. In addition to improving the situation of its members, the organization also aims to improve health care services for all of its clients as well. This is done through a devotion to improving the standards of health care in general by educating nurses and improving nursing practice across the state.
According to their website the Massachusetts Nurses Association’s purpose is as follows:
- “Work for improvement and availability of health care services for all people.
- Foster high standards of nursing practice, education and research.
- Promote the health and safety of nurses.
- Act and speak for registered nurses in Massachusetts.
- Foster involvement by RNs in the political process to shape sound health policies”.
Membership
According to its website, the following structures apply in terms of membership in the Massachusetts Nurses Association:
“The membership structure of the MNA varies to meet the changing needs of the growing nursing community and healthcare culture”. Most members fall into one of the following categories:
- Bargaining Unit Members: This is for nurses and health care professionals in a bargaining unit.
- Non-Bargaining Unit Members: This is for full Non-Labor Membership for those registered nurses who wish to join the MNA and are not in a MNA collective bargaining unit.
- Associate Member Non-Labor: This is for associate Non-Labor Membership for any registered nurse who is not covered by an MNA collective bargaining agreement. This is the non-voting member option.
- Full Non-Labor Membership: This is for those registered nurses who wish to join the MNA and are not in a MNA collective bargaining unit.
- Associate Non-Labor Membership: This is for any registered nurse who is not covered by an MNA collective bargaining agreement. This is the non-voting member option.
Retirees, students, new graduates, disabled nurses and nurses on leaves of absence have access to special membership programs.
According to their website: “The annual rate of dues shall be equal to two times the base hourly rate which shall not be less than the minimum rate set by the average of all step one hourly rates (x2) of all MNA collective bargaining scales in effect as of January 1st of the applicable year and not greater than the maximum rate set by the average of all step seven hourly rates (x2) of all MNA collective bargaining scales in effect as of January 1st of the applicable year. Such minimum and maximum rates shall not be less than the prior year and shall take effect as of July 1st of the applicable year”.
However there are situations in which you may be eligible for a reduced rate. If you are a health professional labor program member or a limited hours labor program member you will only pay 75% of the annual dues. If, however, you are a Registered Nurse who is not an MNA labor program member, you will pay 100% of the annual dues. If you are a nurse who is not employed, a registered nurse student in full time study, a graduate of a nursing program (for the first two years of membership, if initiated within six months following graduation), or a member 62 years of age or over and not earning more than the Social Security System allows, you will only have to pay 50% of the annual dues to maintain membership. If you are Members who are 62 years of age or over and not employed or a member who is totally disabled you may only have to pay 25% of the annual dues payable.
As part of a strategic effort, the MNA procures monthly membership dues through Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT Direct) directly from member checking or credit card accounts. This is the preferred payment plan and there is no fee.
