Illinois has one of the largest populations in the US and this means that there are a lot of employment opportunities for people who want to study towards their LPN qualification.


LPNs and other nursing professionals are in increased demand which means that if you work in Illinois as an LPN you will be in a secure job. You will have fewer worries than employees in practically every other sector as you will know that your job is secure and you will be in stable position. And, once you are an LPN you will be able to expand your opportunities even further by becoming an RN or even getting your bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Licensing Requirements

IN order to become licensed in the state of Illinois you will have to firstly have received your high school diploma or an equivalent qualification. You will also need to be older than 18 years of age if you intend to become an LPN in the state of Illinois. You will have to have a clear criminal background or else you will not be able to become an LPN. You will also need to pass a health check as it is essential that nurses be in good health when working. If you meet these requirements you will then be able to enroll in a state approved LPN program. If the program is not state approved than you will be wasting your time and your money. Then you will be able to write the NCLEX-PN exam, which is essential for becoming licensed as an LPN in the state of Illinois.

Exam Fee

Like with everything in life you will have to pay certain fees in order to write the NCLEX-PN exam and become licensed. When you register for the exam you will have to pay $200, you will also have to pay $91 to the Illinois State Board of Nursing in order to become a fully licensed LPN. Once you are licensed you will have to renew your license every two years at a fee of $30.

There are several avenues of inquiry to consider when looking for financial aid for your LPN qualification in Illinois.

Nursing Education Scholarship Program:

One of the main grants offered in Illinois for people hoping to get help studying for their LPN qualification is the Nursing Education Scholarship Program. To qualify for this program you will need:

  • To be an American citizen, or
  • A legal permanent resident living in the US
  • To have resided in Illinois for a minimum of one year
  • To be enrolled in an LPN program that is in fact approved and accredited by the Illinois State Board of Nursing
  • To comply with all of the other prerequisites laid out in the Illinois Administrative Code

Make sure that you comply with all of these prerequisites before you apply. If you do not ascertain ahead of time whether or not you are eligible to apply, you may end up wasting time that you could have spent looking for financial aid from other sources.
To apply for the Nursing Education Scholarship Program you will need to:

  • Fill in the application form. This form can be downloaded from the website of the Illinois Department of Public Health Center for Rural Health. On this form you will have to answer certain questions. When applying you will have to provide information about:
    1. Your personal contact
    2. Your financial situation
    3. Education
    4. Any other sources of funding you are receiving for your LPN training
    • Submit a transcript of any education you have completed. This includes a transcript of your high school results, and any other education you have done since you have graduated from high school.
    • Submit a copy of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid that you will have to download from the website of the US Department of education. Fill out this form and include it with your application and your educational transcripts.
    • Submit your application and all of the accompanying documentation between the first of March and the thirty-first of May.

    There are a few facts about the Nursing Education Scholarship Program that you should keep in mind when applying.

    • The Nursing Education Scholarship Program will only provide funding for one year of study
    • The Nursing Education Scholarship Program will only pay up to 75% of you tuition fees, so you will still have to find another source of money to cover the rest of your tuition costs
    • The primary criteria that is used in order to determine who should get the Nursing Education Scholarship Program is financial situation – the Nursing Education Scholarship Program is more likely to be given to students who are having financial difficulties
    • Financial eligibility for this scholarship is determined by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and the Illinois Department of Public Health Center for Rural Health based on the answers that you fill out in the FAFSA form
    • Once you have completed your studies you will be obligated to serve the state of Illinois in repayment for the Nursing Education Scholarship Program
    • In order to repay your debt you will have to work for a period of one year for the state of Illinois
    • If you do not find work within six months you will have to repay the scholarship in full
